Winter at the Grand Canyon South Rim

Some time ago we went to my precious niece's wedding in Arizona then took a trip  to the Grand Canyon.   I thought I would share some info with you in case you ever want to consider visiting the South Rim in Feb.  I only have info. here about the South Rim.  Our trip was in Winter and the roads in the canyon were open to vehicles.    The look out points are only accessible by shuttle starting on March 1st. You can literally walk out of your hotel take a shuttle to the shuttle stop and visit the specific look out points on the South Rim.  We stayed at the Eltovar hotel in the Grand Canyon Village.  The reservations during peak seasons are usually booked 8-12 months in advance.  We had no problem getting a room in Feb. although, we did book in Oct.   The restaurant requires reservations during peak season,  we did not need any in Feb. Turns out, access to the roads leading to the overview sit...

Florida Museum of Natural History Butterfly Rainforest

An Angel Wing Begonias pastel blooms glisten in the sunlight. The Rainforest is full of beautiful, well tended to tropical plants in full bloom. Be sure to bring your camera. The Owl butterfly is native to Central and South America.  This one is feeding on the sugars of rotted fruit.  This large butterfly has swift wing movement much like that of a bat. Heliconius hecale butterfly resting upon leaf.  This butterfly is a Heliconius longwing. The fertilized female lays her eggs  upon the tendrils and  newly sprouted leaf tips of the tropical Passionflower vines. They have soft, delicate flight patterns. Yellow blooms invite pollinators to visit.   The conservatory has many blooming plants. Butterflies are attracted to brightly colored flowers. Gorgeous pastel blooms surround you as you walk down the  beautiful pathways enjoying the butterflies in flight.  It is awesome to view Gods natural beauty eve...

The White Ibis are here!

We have lived in our ranch house here in Katy, Texas for over twenty years now and I have never seen these birds, White Ibis, visit our yard.  I did have the opportunity to be blessed with their visit this past week. My sister, the Birder says that the ones with the brown feathers are immature and the white are the elder.   They flew together and moved together; slowly piercing their slightly curved, long orange beaks into the soft soil to feed. Staying less than five minutes, they flew away together.  I tried to move so close to them to get a good shot surely, I am the reason they left so soon.  This last week there have been lots of sighting of water birds up and down my street.  My neighbor had a few hundred ducks in his yard last night.  I love to be surrounded in a natural environment that allows these visitors.  There is so much construction going on around us they must have had their natural environment destroyed and are looking for food an...

Wimberly Market Days Booth 302 Remodel

Mr. Bob Bishop, our carpenter, did an amazing job on our both remodel located in Wimberly, Texas at Wimberly Market Days just a few miles outside of Wimberly town square on FM 2325.   Originally, we had hoped to add a layer of fresh paint and repair the leaking roof.  As soon as Bob started to work on booth, we realized that additional remodels were required to complete the job.  The original flooring was covered with carpet and once that was removed, we found out that the plywood was rotted and eaten by termites. In order for Bob to install a new floor, he had to reframe the structure so he could raise and replace the flooring.  He also added some steps outside the booths new  side and rear entrance.  Bob added trusses to strengthen the roof, removed and resealed all screws on rooftop, built a storage area with a ceiling and two doors.  He then installed two vintage wooden windows in two corners.  He also closed in two walls and added a...
